Cook the Perfect Ballpark Hotdog
For this Labor Day weekend, I thought I’d take a quick break from the preparedness blogging and share my secret for making the perfect hotdog at home.
I’ve seen hotdogs boiled, grilled, baked and microwaved, but if you really want to reproduce the ballpark hodog, then steaming is the method of choice!
Steaming your Hotdogs
To steam at home, use a Dutch oven fitted with a steamer rack, or a bamboo steamer, or if you’re like me find a pan with a lid and a metal strainer basket.
Fill the pan with enough water to reach just below the steamer rack or strainer basket. Make sure that you don’t overfill, you really don’t want liquid bubbling up onto your hot dogs or worse, your rolls.
Bring your liquid to a boil, reduce heat to low, add hot dogs to the strainer or steamer basket. Cover tightly and steam 5-7 minutes or until hot dogs are heated through.
To steam your rolls, stack them on top of the dogs in the last two minutes of cooking.
I know this sounds simple, but trust me, this is as close as you can get to hot dog perfection without buying a hot dog cooker. To be honest this method does beat the pants off many of so-called hot dog cooking devices!
